Muammar Muhammad Bakry (Muammar Bakry), born in Ujung Pandang on November 22, 1973, is the Secretary of the Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) of South Sulawesi from 2021 to 2026. He is also as the Grand Imam of the Al-Markaz Al-Islami General M. Jusuf Mosque.
From 2016 to 2019, he was appointed as Vice Rector IV of the Islamic University of Makassar (UIM). In 2020, he returned to his home base as a lecturer in the Comparative Schools and Law Study Program at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, UIN Alauddin, with additional duties as Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, UIN Alauddin, in 2020-2023. He was subsequently appointed as the Professor of Contemporary Islamic Law on August 2022. In 2023, he returned to UIM, appointed as Rector until 2027.
In 2006, he founded the Alfakhriyah Multidimensional Islamic Boarding School in Makassar. In addition to serving as the Head of the Al-Fakhriyah Islamic Boarding School, he was also entrusted by AGH. Dr. (Hc) Sanusi Baco, Lc., as the Head of Academic Affairs at the Nahdlatul Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Maros until 2021. He also pioneered SDIT Maarif Makassar and has served as the Director of Islam Maarif since 2012. His strong commitment to education and da’wah led him to establish the Sulawesi Islamic Moderation Foundation and built the Baitul Maarif Islamic Junior High School in Makassar.
Beyond his educational activities, he was active in some religious organizations, serving as the Deputy Chair of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) South Sulawesi Board of Trustees (PWNU) in 2024-2029. He is also active on the board of the Majelis Istisyari DDI (Darud Dakwah wal Irsyad) and was once the Chair of the Umam ICATT (Association of Middle East Alumni Intellectuals).
Furthermore, He also joined the South Sulawesi FKPT as the Head of the Religious Affairs and Education Division. He was subsequently appointed by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) as the Chair of the South Sulawesi FKPT (Coordination Forum for Terrorism Prevention) in 2022-2025.
In other organizations, he was appointed by the Governor of South Sulawesi as Chair of the Interfaith Harmony Forum (FKUB) in 2025 and also as Chair of the Religious Working Group of the South Sulawesi KPA (Aids Prevention Commission) in 2021.
He is also a member of several other organizations, including ICMI, IPHI, DMI, and others, at the South Sulawesi provincial level. He is also currently the Advisor and Administrator of IPIM (Ittihad Brotherhood of Mosque Imams), both at the central and provincial levels.
In addition to his active involvement in education, da’wah, and religious organizations, he also serves on the Sharia Supervisory Board of the Harta Insan Karimah BPRS and the Dana Monetary BPRS.
